Well, yes. But I've been reading Douglas Brinkley's biography of Walter Cronkite and am at the part where the avuncular one claimed on the air that Sen. Barry Goldwater, then running for president against LBJ, was like a Nazi. Which, like the Mitt accusation, was also a low-down rotten lie--albeit a most effective one.
